Sweden and Norway have set up the first federated network of interchanges as part of the NordicWay 3 program.
An interchange federation offers C-ITS service providers the possibility of connecting to a network of interchanges by connecting to one interchange.
Genuine international cooperation in smart mobility
Telecom Italia (TIM S.p.A.) has successfully connected to the Sweden Interchange and, through this interchange, also consumed data from Norway. This is done as part of the C-Roads Hybrid Testing Group.
And to go even more international, Spain, via CTAG (Centro Tecnológico de Automoción de Galicia), plans to connect with the Interchange Federated Network in the near future as well.
CTAG representatives tell us, “One of the main objectives for CTAG as manager of the SISCOGA CCAM corridor located in Spain is to ensure the best performances for the V2X services available for road users and testers.
With this in mind, reliability and interoperability are and should be observed, whatever kind of communication technology (short or long range) supports the provision of such services. We firmly believe that services should be technology agnostic, using what is available or fitting better in every situation.
To this extent, we see participation in C-Roads test activities as key to meeting such commitment. Especially due to the different characteristics of the European road transport system and different national strategies for deploying V2X services.
To specifically cater for long-range communication and associated issues, participation in C-Roads TF4 “Hybrid communication” test sessions was established and kept beyond the end of our funded C-ROADS project activities. In our view, collaborating with the process to jointly create a harmonised, interoperable and sustainable large-scale network for data exchange between countries coexisting with the provision of short-range based communication is key to exploit all the potential of V2X services to improve levels of safety, efficiency and pollution reduction along European roads.”
What is an interchange, and what does it do?
C-ITS services are built on the communication and interoperability of the technical systems of different mobility stakeholders. In this international multi-stakeholder ecosystem that spans other technical & geographical domains, there is a need for a service that allows end users to receive C-ITS services as they cross over these domains seamlessly.
To put it into relatable terms, there is a need for a telephone exchange-like service to provide the service matchmaking and data exchange between C-ITS data/service providers and C-ITS data/ service users.
The importance of an interchange federation
Why is it important to have an interchange federation at all? Well, service providers (such as navigation app developers and Tier 1 parties) can connect to an open interchange. This way, they can learn what type of data is available in the entire network of the connected interchanges, which will help them to create the mobility solution optimally. And what’s even faster and smarter is that the service providers can consume all the data in one place.
