CITY ACCESS

Conditional city access for designated traffic

Having a liveable city centre with an attractive residential and economic climate is crucial to the attractiveness of a city. However, those qualities often create tension between the residents, shops, and visitors, as traffic becomes an issue with the visiting cars and distribution trucks travelling through the city centre. Consequently, the term “low-traffic” occurs frequently in the policy of many cities.

With retractable bollards and poles connected to Monotch’s TLEX platform, a dynamic solution is created to balance restricting access and to allow designated traffic conditionally into the city centre. As a result, the city centre remains accessible, but there will never be more traffic than necessary in the area.

How TLEX works for city access

When approaching access barriers and bollards in controlled areas, a designated vehicle’s OBU/APP sends access request messages to its service platform, which is then forwarded onto the TLEX platform. The TLEX platform then redirects these data to the access barrier’s/bollard’s control system. The control system verifies the request and automatically grants access to the approaching vehicle with the correct credentials by retracting the barrier.

Benefits for cities

The main benefit of this use case is the balance and control that is given to authorities to execute their traffic access policies in city centres, which may include:

  • Restricting car traffic to local traffic only
  • Setting policies for access control for designated traffic, e.g. electric vehicles only
  • Granting access to emergency services when needed

Impact using TLEX in city centres

Using TLEX for access to city centres will create accessible centres that are not crowded by unnecessary traffic passing through it.
